Warm Home Discount 2025

Many people have been affected by the changes to the Winter Fuel Payment. In September 2024, it was announced that there would be cuts to the scheme, with only people over 65 who receive qualifying benefits now eligible for the payment.

The government have now confirmed that they will go ahead with the Warm Home Discount. This is a lesser known payment which can help with heating bills. It’s a £150 discount off your electricity bill, which is paid straight to your electricity supplier. Unlike, the Winter Fuel Payment, this is also available to people in Scotland.

Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount?

To be eligible, you must either:

• Get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
• Be on a low income and…
  • In England or Wales, you must have high electricity costs
  • In Scotland, you must meet your electricity supplier’s criteria for the discount

Your energy supplier must be part of the scheme for you to receive the discount. There are lots of participating energy suppliers, some of the biggest include:

• British Gas
• Scottish Power
• Octopus Energy
• E.ON
• Shell Energy
• EDF Energy
• Sainsbury’s Energy
• OVO
• Utilita
• Utility Warehouse
• 100Green
• Boost

If your energy supplier isn’t on this list, it’s worth checking with them as they may well be part of the scheme and be happy to give you a the discount to help with your bill. 

You may also be eligible if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter, but you’ll need to contact your supplier directly for more information.

How can I apply for the Warm Home Discount?

If you receive the Guarantee Element of Pension Credit, you should automatically get the Warm Home Discount.

If you don’t get that benefit but are on a low income, you can apply from October 2024.

Can I get the Winter Fuel Payment as well as the Warm Home Discount?

Yes, if you are eligible for both, you can get both. The Winter Fuel Payment is only for people living in England and Wales, while the Warm Home Discount is for people living in England, Wales or Scotland.

When will I get the Warm Home Discount?

If eligible, you should get the discount by 31 March 2025.
