Formally known as TLC Homecare, Choices Homecare's motto is 'skilled care your way', which is a philosophy they look to bring to older and vulnerable adults throughout South and West Yorkshire. They are proud to support people to live in their own homes for longer and can provide a full range of homecare services.

Their 'Values' are embedded throughout the Organisation to ensure they reflect their Vision (...to deliver a service to be proud of, and that they are able to deliver the best quality of care that they can for all of their service users.

They offer a person centred approach to a wide range of care needs (offering support with: personal care, meal preparation, medication assistance, home respite/safety check visits or sitting services whilst family go out, assisting service users to go out into the community, shopping, light domestic help and more). They can also provide support to adults who suffer dementia or those with learning or other disabilities.

There is a strong focus on quality recruitment and training and Choices are passionate about delivering safe, well planned services; care and support workers promote choice and independence to assist service users in remaining as independent as possible, whatever the situation. Outcome-focused services take account of client preferences and aspirations, with 'Choices' considering themselves as 'working in partnership with their service users' to deliver, quality services to each and every one.

Most of the carers are kind and include me in conversation. Some (a few hardly talk to me and discuss other service users and their needs and treatment). Most of my carers encourage me to be independent which means they have 'free time'. Many of the carers realise that we as a couple have complex needs
and help out in any way they can, putting clothes away, and taking piles of washing upstairs (including my husband's clothes). I really appreciate all the help they give but I do not take it for granted.

I would like to thank all office staff and home care providers at TLC Homecare for their thorough and kind approach to the care of Mum. Particular thanks to the care providers who are punctual and reliable and because the same staff attend to Mum's needs, it means less stress and anxiety for Mum, my
sister and me.

One lady has always been available to speak to and arrange a review with; she has always tried her hardest to accommodate our requests.
My family feel that my mum is treated with respect and dignity; they go above and beyond. The carers respond to Mum's changing needs.

The one thing that's wrong with this company is that some of the carers don't give me the privacy that I ask for. I find some very intimidating. They try to take my independence away from me and they're always nearly an hour late.

Reply from Elaine Bradley-Smith, Employee Engagement & Communications Officer at Choices Homecare (Barnsley)

Thank you for taking the time to review us. We take all feedback very seriously and appreciate all comments received (both positive & negative), to assist us in making further improvements in the future and to allow us to promptly resolve any issues, that may occur. We have been extremely impressed by TLC so far. The standard of care and communication is very high. The "app" service is excellent - really useful in keeping abreast of the daily updates. In respect of all the carers we have met - extremely kind and considerate to nursing needs, and all doing a great
job. Thanks!

Not always treated with dignity. Changed in the lounge with blinds open. Communication - I don't like the way some carers speak to me.

These are strange times. The staff on the ground (carers) are running themselves ragged. The way carers and care companies have been seen, funded and worked has been so negatively that carers have left the companies at a greater pace. Care companies are now unable to meet needs, in particular, my needs.
I feel for the staff that are run off their feet.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your review. Please rest assured that we take all feedback very seriously (both positive and negative), to assist us in improving our services as we move forwards into the future. We have asked the Registered Manager of your service to get in touch, in order to discuss the comments made. We agree that the current times can be challenging for the care industry but remain committed to working together as always, with our staff, service users and other bodies and stakeholders, to ensure we continue providing the best care services that we can. Should any of our service users feel they have an issue with the level of care they receive, we would always ask them to contact their local office as soon as possible (on their usual contact number), who will do everything they can to help and rectify any problems as needed. Thanks again for your feedback and comments.

It is just like an everyday routine. I just have carers to give me my medication morning and night. If I was having trouble opening a bottle most of them would do it for me. Some ask if there is anything I want doing. Most times, it's just giving me tablets. To be honest, it's someone to talk to. I
got quite close to a carer who left. She would have done anything for me. I do miss her. Now, there are quite a few young carers just learning the job.

Reply from Elaine Bradley-Smith, Employee Engagement & Communications Officer at Choices Homecare (Barnsley)

Thank you for taking the time to complete your review, we appreciate all feedback received and are pleased you find our staff generally helpful. We are sorry that a regular carer left and that you miss her but we hope that, in time, you will feel the same about the newer care workers who visit you. Please rest assured that all care workers have completed our training programme and are working towards (if not completed) their nationally recognised care certificate qualification. If you have any issues or anything you'd like to discuss further, please contact our office on your usual contact number and a member of our team will be happy to have a chat and will do their best to support you with resolving any problems. Thanks again for submitting your review.

My father has been receiving personal care from TLC Homecare - Barnsley for over 12 months now. The carers are always polite and professional and my father looks forward to their visits 3 times a week. The treatment he receives is excellent and contributes to maintaining one of his health conditions.
This service and the visits provide additional reassurance to his family.

I'm Carol and I manage the Dearne area, Darfield, Wombwell, Royston and Athersley. I started as a care worker in 1998 at Christmas to earn a bit of extra cash for the kid's Christmas presents, This was supposed to be temporary and that was 25 years ago. Along the way, I somehow landed a care coordinator role without ever realising it in 2003 and have been with the exact same company all these years. Over that time I have had a lot of mums work in my area and now some of their children work for me. I am committed and love to help where I can.

I love my family and pets and always enjoy spending good quality time with them.

I never thought of ever getting into care work until the horrible COVID-19 struck and I couldn't do my previous job. I felt grounded and needed to get out of the house. I then saw a job for home care and thought I'd give that a go! I fell in love with care so much that I gave my other job up and became a team leader, due to hard work, dedication and great transferable skills I became a care coordinator. I joined TLC due to the positive things I had heard and the career progression that is offered. Since starting I have never looked back and can't wait to see where this journey will take me.

In my spare time, I love spending time with my beautiful little boy and husband.
