Job Title: Local Care Service Manager
Hello, I'm Amanda the Local Care Service Manager for the North East.
Have over 10 years experience in the care sector in this time I have gained various qualifications including my NVQ Level 4 in Leadership and Management in Care and A1 Assessor.
My experience with the over 65s
I previously worked with a lady with Cerebral Palsy, her husband was also registered blind and had learning disabilities. I worked with them over a long period of time and discovered that the lady missed being able to go out shopping into town. We arranged a plan and a route using public transport where she was able to go into town using her electric wheelchair and her husband could accompany us. She was able to spend time shopping and choosing her own clothes. We worked closely with her social worker and managed to implement this on to the care plan to ensure it occurred every month.
My experience with the under 65s
I came into the care sector working as a member of a care team dealing with customers from the age 18. One customer was a gentleman who was physically disabled and unable to speak. However he had no problems letting your know when he was happy or unhappy. His parents both worked and also had another son with a learning disability so their time spent directly with him could sometimes be limited. During the holidays I found activities in the area and took him out most days in the wheelchair. We visited local parks, galleries, went to the shops and spent lots of time giving him the choice of what we did each day.
The carers
One of my first meetings with a ‘Helping Hands’ carer is the one I remember most. This carer has been with her customer for a number of months and in that time the family have noticed substantial positive changes in their mother - from not wanting to leave the house and carrying out very few tasks herself, the carer and her customer now go out walking and the customer loves to clean and help around the house. Her mobility has improved immensely.
Job Title: Local Care Service Manager
Hello, I'm Alison the Local Care Service Manager for the East Midlands.
I have almost twelve years experience within the care sector, including working at Nottingham City Hospital, a care assistant in a residential/nursing home and working within the domiciliary homecare sector where I was a registered manager.
My experience with the over 65s
I have worked predominantly with the over 65’s whose care needs varied greatly.
I have worked with stroke patients, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Alzheimer’s right through to palliative care. I have found the bond that I developed with both the clients and their families to be extremely rewarding, I would like to think that I was able to help enrich their lives as much as they did mine.
My experience with the under 65s
Whilst I worked with fewer younger adults, the variety of conditions that I have experience of include Multiple Sclerosis, Friedrerich’s Ataxia, Cerebral Palsy, Huntingdon’s Disease, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health. Enabling younger people to live as independently as possible is vital if we are to ensure that social isolation is eliminated.
The carers
Good carers are worth their weight in gold and can make such a difference to people's lives.
Once a carer called me on Christmas Day to ask whether it would be alright to visit a client and take a Christmas dinner to her as she knew that she would be alone, this was done in the carer's own time and took her away from her own family. This to me said volumes about the carer and I know it brought the biggest of smiles to the client's face. For me, that is what caring is all about
