Home Instead Hereford is part of the national Home Instead office group, which has over 250 offices nationally, with nearly 40% rated Outstanding by the CQC, compared to a sector average of just 5%. Their core service offerings are companionship, home help, and personal care, with a big emphasis on individual, person-centred care which enhances the quality of life for its older people, so all care support is highly-personalised.

Care Professionals are recruited primarily for their high personal values and are trained in doing so much more than simple, but very important, care tasks, focusing on the genuinely caring relationship with its Clients, alongside the practical tasks of care. Awarded the Princess Royal Training Award, they offer City & Guilds-assured training in Dementia and End-of-Life care and are the only homecare provider to have this accreditation.

If Clients are able to leave their homes, then the care will include, at the Client's choice, doing all the things which Clients enjoy, or used to enjoy, doing, but now with a little help. Knowing clients are receiving this person-centred care also gives family and loved ones great peace of mind, knowing those closest to them are being well cared for.

Very often, they become an extended member of the family, stepping in, as needed, for anything in the daily life of Mum or Dad. They also offer a range of technology which provides 24/7 assurance that Mum or Dad is OK, when there may be no-one else in their house, or technology which allows video calls with loved ones and sharing of photos.

My 92 year old father always wanted to stay at home as long as possible.

Home Instead provided him with an excellent care package which allowed him to extend his stay at home by a further 18 months. We were provided with a service that adapted over this period to cater for dad's changing requirements.

It was a real team service from the staff in the office to the carers who provided very kind care.

I cannot recommend their services too highly and am very grateful for all the help and support we received.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write quite a few words of feedback and to rate us so highly. We never, ever take this high praise for granted but we simply strive to support our older generation exactly as we would want our own parents supported, living life to the full as much as possible, in and out of the home and I know we were able to support your father a great deal out of the home. Are care staff had great love for him and he is a lovely, lovely older gentleman - it was an utter honour to support him over that time.

I cannot thank you enough for the care that you have given to both my elderly parents.
They looked forward to each visit.
I'd also like to thank you for helping me too.
You were always so helpful and cheerful.
You always gave me excellent advice.
Thank you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to submit this review of the care and support we have provided to your parents. With my own parents aged 88 and 95, 200 miles away, I know the full value of assuring family members that Mum or Dad, or both, are in safe and loving hands, so we always try hard to be an extended member of the family, available at all times.

Home Instead team have been wonderful, our brother's care has been a positive turning point for us and most importantly our brother. The support and kindness shown are 5 stars. Home Instead put our brother at the centre of his care plan, he is happy and loves the interaction with the care team. While
we know his medication etc is done and he always has a reliable team caring for all his needs.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write this review and we are truly delighted to hear that, with some support from us this has been that 'turning point' for both him and you, as nearby family. We do work hard on matching staff to their clients, as the small team spends so much time with him and mutual understanding and relationships are so important, backed up by the professional skills and training our staff have, giving your assurance that all is well. Thank you again!

I'm beyond impressed with the support from Home Instead, the carer is fantastic, and flexible when I request changes to visits etc. I've even managed to go on holiday & support has been excellent in my absence. I can't praise the team highly enough.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Dear Julie, thank you so much for your very favourable review and I am delighted that, in May, we were able to have the same carer, who has been with us for 4 years and is hugely experienced in the care and support needed for your husband, for all bar one visit. we will always be driven by our client needs and always as flexible to those needs as needed, including extra visits and changing times, giving you important respite times. We hugely appreciate your time given to write this review which is much valued and we share all these with our care staff.

When I needed some help at home after an emergency admission to hospital my family, all of whom live over 100 miles away, immediately contacted Home Instead who had provided such wonderful care during my wife’s final illness. As a retired hospital physician, I knew that my wife had presented complex
care requirements in what proved to be her final illness. The staff of Home Instead rose magnificently to every new challenge and were always prepared to "go the extra mile", whether caring for my wife or supporting me at what was an exceptionally difficult time for both of us. Friendly but always respectful, they had clearly been well trained and took a pride in their work. The Care Quality Commission rated Home Instead Hereford as 'Good' in every category. As an experienced clinician who observed them at first hand over several months, I considered them 'Outstanding' in all categories.
When I needed help I didn’t have to wait until the next day for hospital transport to get home because two carers arrived from Home Instead that morning to collect me. I don’t need much help now but what they provide is invaluable, e.g. changing bed linen, getting me a meal now and then, emergency shopping when I’ve forgotten something on the supermarket order, washing up or whatever needs doing, getting me out into the country on a fine day (my eyesight prevents me from driving), I could go on and on. Always friendly, always on time (or a warning call from Head Office if delayed more than 10 minutes), always professional, I can’t recommend them too highly.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Your story is quite a remarkable one and received with the utmost respect, as a retired physician, as your expectations of great care will be perhaps higher than most who haven't worked in the care sector previously. I know your story well, with us having supported your dear, late wife and then receiving a call, a few months later, that you might benefit from some gentle, non-invasive support. We even have the photo of the day we 'rescued' you from the hospital and brought you home! Every word of your review is hugely valued - thank so much for all of that feedback.

My husband is severely disabled, with complex needs, and it's been difficult to find a care company who could give him the necessary standard of care. Home Instead are an absolute delight. The carers are extremely kind and friendly, highly competent and well-trained in all aspects of his care. The company
are very approachable and supportive of both our needs.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Thank you for your honesty about your husband's care needs and, in your case, and despite any complexities, how we are able to support you, with nurse-led support where needed, to ensure safe care and best quality of life at all times. It's a small example of 'extra' thought and care but I recall one of our care staff thinking of your husband on Valentine's Day and supported him with flowers to give to you - a heart-melting image! We are truly honoured to support you both.

For the last 12 months or so, my dad has been taken care of by a wonderful team from Home Instead. His needs were simple at first, - company, light housework. This progressed to daily personal care when some health issues flared up and the office was able to adapt his care package very quickly.
The
carers are exactly that, caring, which is so important for all concerned. My interaction with them has always been positive and friendly, they are helpful and entertaining for Dad.
One phrase from our first 'assessment' has always stuck with me and when recommending to others it is the phrase that always convinces them. Having explained how hard it had been for me to do cleaning, shopping, and personal and emotional care on my own, a particular staff member said 'Leave that to us; we will do all that so you can go back to being his daughter' and that is what it has meant to me. My time with Dad is less stressful, we have laughs and good times and that is thanks in large part to the Home Instead team.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Kim, thank you so much for this very kind and thorough review. Yes, we aim to deliver exactly that, either 'the son/daughter who cannot be there' and be your 'eyes and ears' with all the professional training or, as you remembered, allowing you to 'go back to being his daughter'. I've seen photos of your dad and can see the evident bond that our wonderful care staff have built with Dad - the next best thing to being his daughter, in emotional care and support. We also work hard to be very responsive indeed to changing care needs, scaling up or scaling back, as needed, giving you peace of mind at all times.

On my husband’s release from the hospital, with end-of-life care, we were allocated care from another agency, whose carers we grew to know. But I had already contacted Home Instead because our district nurses had said how good they were.
The compromise was that Home Instead would provide companionship
for my husband, so I could leave him to go to town for things which could only be done in person. These carers offer kindness, interest in his life and sharing of their own interests. They will never be idle - if he’s asleep they will sweep through, notice if there is ironing to be done. They are always punctual and I know that if any nursing need should arise then they are well-qualified to help him. Sometimes our usual carer can’t come, because she is on, for example, a dementia training day. So I feel even more secure.
I am grateful for the professionalism of all at Home Instead and also for their advice and offers of help beyond the call of duty.
We have had five extra months together, thanks.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Dear Maureen, thank you so much for this very personal and meaningful feedback and review. With our own in-house nurse on hand indeed we have worked hard to be able to ensure that, no matter what the needs are, we will always work for a care package which keeps the client safe and well at home, with the maximum quality of life which can be achieved, with their loved ones. We also have great colleagues in the District Nurse community with whom we work hand in hand. There is no greater gift we can give our clients, delivered with utmost compassion and understanding, whilst encouraging and protecting independence and choice.

Home Instead have been providing care to my mum for 3 years. The carers have been of an excellent standard and are prepared to turn their hand to anything that needs doing, not just personal care. They turn up on time and my mum has a small team of regular carers and is not bombarded with lots of different
faces (as happens with some other care agencies). The carers respect my mum’s dignity but they all seem to have a good sense of humour, which my mum enjoys. The app which records case notes of each visit and the rota (of which carer is due to visit for the next week), is particularly useful and reassuring to me as I live a long way away from my mum. I have no hesitation in recommending Home Instead.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Dear Diane, thank you so much for your kind and assuring words, and for entrusting your mum to us over the last 3 years - it is such an honour for us to support her. Respecting dignity and independence is a core part of all that we do and, for you, living at a distance, giving that peace of mind that Mum is under great care is also something which we know is important and valued greatly. We know that we are not the cheapest provider but start with paying what we believe we need to pay to get the very best care staff and then balance against what we hope is seen to be a fair price for great quality care, and also always ensuring we have capacity to say 'yes'.

With my grandad passing away, and Nan having health problems herself we knew that external help would be needed not only to help keep on top of the household jobs but for emotional support for her also. We are so glad we chose Home Instead as the company for her. Not only are the care professionals
understanding, supportive and caring but little things get done without even having to ask them. Nan looks forward to the days they come not only for household jobs but also to have a friendly face to chat with. All of us have seen such a change in her positivity and we are forever grateful for her care team providing that. She has the chance to get out of the house without worrying about one of us being there which is lovely for her. We couldn’t have chosen a better team for her, she thanks them very much for everything they do for her.

Thank you, Charlotte for your very kind words. Because we aim to recruit the very best care staff we can find much of what they deliver is not simply because they have been trained to do it but because they simply see the things which need doing to support a safe and great quality of life. Having clients who genuinely look forward to their small team of care staff arriving is great to hear and always what we hope, being trusted and valued visitors to the home, with all they bring.

When I had to find a care agency it was a daunting task but I am so glad I found Home Instead. The carers were outstanding and their commitment and kindness shown to my mother and family in what was a very difficult time for us was outstanding. I particularly liked the fact that I had an app on my phone
and they recorded every little detail so I was able to see how my mother was doing at any time. Thank you to all involved in my mother’s care.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble, after a very difficult period, to write this - this is the ultimate reward for our care staff, who we try to pick very carefully to deliver this outstanding care, knowing that they have made a huge difference to the care and compassion of your mother in her time with us, and giving you full assurance that your mum was in these professional hands. Thanks for mentioning the app, yes, we try to be utterly transparent and it's great being able to give you near-real-time updates on each visit. Thank you again - we really do appreciate this!

I don’t usually leave reviews but felt I must share our experience.
We (my mother and myself) felt nervous and apprehensive about seeking support to help us care for my lovely grandmother. It really was hugely daunting.
First, a staff member, came out to assess my grandmother's care and support requirements,
she was professional, caring and sensitive to my grandmother's personal and emotional needs, as well as understanding the dynamics and personalities of our family network, and so our journey began.
‘The team’ have been an absolute success; I can not speak highly enough of them. They are professional, caring with dignity always, sympathetic, interacting beautifully with both my mother and Grandmother (lots of laughter). They are an absolute pleasure to have in the home and have bought so much peace of mind for the family. A huge thank you to all the girls (ladies) for taking such care of my amazing grandmother and the lovely ladies in the office who are always so friendly and efficient.

Thank you so much for taking the time to publish this lovely review, particularly as, as you say, you don't normally write reviews, so this is extra special and highly valued! It is always a delight to support the existing family close by without interfering or taking away any independence of the older person (your grandmother) but supplementing previous support, where needed, in a highly-personalised way. Most of all, through a small team of care staff, we try hard to be another trusted person allowed into the life of your loved one. Thank you again!

There is an awful time between your parent's independence and the time to admit them into social care.
During this time Home Instead (Hereford) were so supportive. Making the transition so much gentler for my mother. At first, it was tea and a chat, then making sure fluid intake and medication was
correct. Then slowly and with respect helping with personal care her confusion.
They helped us through the minefield of bureaucracy with the social care system.
They have been supporting my mother for the last 3 years and we could not have got through it all without them.
If anyone is looking for this care at whatever stage your loved one is, I would thoroughly recommend Home Instead (Hereford).

I contacted Home Instead after my dad fell, as he is the primary carer for my mum who has Dementia and was struggling. They called back the same day and had carers within days. This worked well, then sadly, Mum fell ill and was admitted to hospital. They kept in contact whilst Mum was in hospital and
offered advice until she was home. Dad wants very much to care for Mum, but her dementia has progressed, so Home Instead ‘double up’ with Dad. This is very important for him.
The carers are all great, as gentle, but persuasive with Mum, to ensure all care tasks are completed. No task is too much trouble. They assist Dad in the house with chores and chat to him. They have also helped us access resources to assist Mum’s comfort, as they have amazing knowledge.
Home Instead have been fantastic from the moment I first contacted them. I do not know where we would be without them, but we certainly would not have Mum at home with Dad, which is our family's priority.

Dear Sally, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to give such extensive feedback. Many of us are sons and daughters of our older parents, often with busy lives ourselves. We do try very hard to be extremely responsive and to start care as soon as needed, sometimes at very short notice. Keeping people, in this case together, at home, safe, well, and as happy as they can be together, is our top, top priority and we are at their service, all the time, in whatever way they wish, coupled with providing assurance to you that they well, with updates after every visit.

I am in awe of any of our staff who see it as an utter privilege to support clients through their last weeks and hours of life, with warmth and love and compassion, which might be just sitting and holding their hand, to know they are never on their own. Home Instead came to our rescue when both of my parents needed care, but they wanted to stay together in their own home. They both became ill very suddenly, and Home Instead stepped in with help, advice and support.
Their knowledgeable owners were able to reassure me that all would be well and that
mum and dad would be beautifully cared for. Support was arranged immediately, and everything was carefully put in place for my parents. All of their needs were respected and taken care of beautifully. The ladies looking after my parents are all wonderful, and are much loved by mum and dad!
The team at the office are equally wonderful, and are easy to talk to, and welcoming! There is always someone with a friendly voice at the end of the phone in case we need them. Thank you, Home Instead for being there when we needed you and continuing to be there for all of us!

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Thank you so much for your very kind words. We really do never take this feedback for granted and always, always try to do better, as we are never happy. It is the greatest compliment when we hear that sons and daughters feel that our care staff have supported their parent, or parents in your case, in all the ways you would hope, focussed entirely on what they want and their preferences, whilst also ensuring they are safe, taking medication as prescribed, and eating and drinking well with good personal care. We care a great deal about all our clients and we love spending time with them, in such a personal way.

My heartfelt thanks to all at Hereford Home Instead. They have assisted my father, who has dementia, for the last 19 months. The support they have given to him and myself, living so far away, is impeccable. They have become very much part of our family. Staff are on call 24/7. If I have concerns, need
to let off steam or just chinwag, someone will always pick up the phone and calm me - that's professionalism! Highly recommended as a home care service. Many thanks and love to you all.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Dear Tara, it has been our utter joy to support you and your father over the last 18 months, including a number of out-of-the-ordinary bits of help (like retrieving motor scooters!), but these are great examples of where there is very little we cannot do to be an 'extended member of the family', who will jump in our car at any time of day, and so valued when no family are living close by. Providing peace of mind that there is always someone on the end of a phone to help who knows and cares deeply for your loved one. All of our care and support staff love your father so much and he has brought us so much joy, helping him out - thank you for your very kind words, which we never take for granted, always wanting to do even better. He has been a great example, who we will often quote, as 'living well' with dementia, content and happy at home

I recommend Home Instead, Hereford and the excellent work they and their carers do every day. My mother would not be able to continue living in her home if it was not for the caregiver’s companionship and support with daily errands and appointments as well as trips out to have lunch or the garden centre.
As I live out of the area knowing my mother is well cared for has been a weight off my shoulders as well as on the odd occasions when I have not been able to contact her, and they have been able to go and make a quick visit to check everything is as it should be. My mother tells me all the caregivers who have visited her are very good to talk to and treat her very well.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Dear Donna, thank you so much for this great feedback, which we never take for granted and are always looking to do better. We work hard to maintain the continuity of care and support staff with our clients, and they have come to care deeply about your mother over the last year or so. As she is able, it has been great to support her to get out and about, as well as help around the home, allowing her to continue leading as independent a life as possible and, with you a little distant, we are delighted to be able to react whenever needed. She is one delightful lady, looking about 20 years younger than her age !

The carers who have attended me have been very good, their timekeeping is good and is reflective of what times I want or as close as possible. If the ideal time is not available to start with the manager and their team strive to meet the ideal time as soon as possible.
The carers have a sense of humour
and treat me as me not as another patient. All of the carers include my family in all decisions made about my care. They are little superstars and have allowed my family to be family.

Reply from Andrew Wood, Director & Owner at Home Instead (Hereford)

Thank you so much for this positive feedback, which we value greatly and never ever take for granted. We work really hard to be a caring and loving extended member of the family, also allowing, as you say, 'family to be family'. In this case, visiting a couple of times every day, we are able to provide a very personalised support package, and at preferred times, as far as we are able. We love having that continuity of support, with a small number of regular care staff.

After having a call stating that my grandmother (she's 95) had a fall at home, we had to make a decision to place her into emergency respite care whilst we tried to figure out a way for her to return home safely as this is where she wanted to be.
A call to Home Instead and a discussion about her needs
gave me assurance (a nurse) that they knew what was needed to enable her to remain in her home.
Since Home Instead have been involved with her care, my grandmother has not only been able to remain at home safely, but they have also improved her nutritional intake and taking care of her personal, psychological and emotional needs.
Home Instead continuously monitor her needs and the needs of us, her family, when we worry about her being at home. Home Instead have worked alongside us and what is best for her.
The app allows us to read what has been going on during the day and how the carers are supporting her. My grandmother loves her carers and enjoys having "banter" with them.

Thank you so much for this feedback and wonderful review. We've exchanged photos, a number of times, of the things we have been able to support your grandmother in doing, and we just love 'bringing joy' to the lives of our older generation. We try, very hard, to be that extended member of the family, whilst protecting her independence, giving you and your family peace of mind that your grandmother is in safe and loving hands - we love her to bits!

Job Title: Registered Manager & Owner

I started my career in private home care in 2006 and, since then, my passion and enthusiasm to work with the elderly and vulnerable adults have only increased. I began as an on-call operator and worked my way up to become a Registered Manager of a branch and then an Area Manager, looking after several branches. I started a home care office from nothing, in Gloucester, and grew it to over 1,000 hours of care a week, in less than 2 years, maintaining the highest retention of care staff.

Being the Registered Care Manager and Director at Home Instead Senior Care in Hereford gives me a wonderful opportunity to have a positive impact on the clients we care for and keeps me closer to the ground and available to our clients and CAREGivers. I'm responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the services we provide and I attend client consultations and love getting to know every one of our clients!

I look forward to every consultation and the opportunity to find solutions, ensuring our clients’ emotional and physical well-being is respected and cared for at all times.

When I am not at work, I am kept busy by my 3 children, 4 dogs, my parents (who live with us) and my husband, from being a taxi driver, ensuring my children attend clubs, college, school, and outings, to endless baskets of laundry. I am still trying to figure out how they each wear 4 outfits in a day! Working in care, and being a mum to teenagers, keeps life exciting, I would not do anything else. Being a part of the Home Instead Senior Care family, one of the most trusted care companies in the United Kingdom, is both a privilege and an honour.
