After working as a carer or care worker for a few years, you might be considering your next career steps. The skills you’ve already learnt as a carer, including empathy and organisation, will be invaluable in whatever you choose to do next.
Career options after working as a carer
If you enjoy the medical side of being a Carer there are many options for furthering your career such as:
Senior Carer
A lot of Carer roles will naturally progress into Senior Carer roles, where you will take on more responsibilities. Some care homes will offer the training required to do this, such as a Level 3 in Health and Social Care.
Nurse
You can specialise in many different areas of nursing, such as Mental Health Nursing or Learning Disability Nursing. This will require further studying and qualifications.
Manager
To become a Manager of a Home Care agency, you’ll need your Level 5 in Health and Social Care Management where you’ll learn about assessment of needs, planning and reviewing care programmes and effective governance.
Area Manager
After a few years in a Manager role, you could have enough experience to manage a region of offices.
If you prefer the non-medical side of caring, there are also opportunities:
Social worker
You’ll need a degree or postgraduate programme to become a Social Worker and you can specialise in working with older people.
Care Coordinator
This is an administrative role, involving creating care plans for clients and managing rotas.
Training roles
Using your hands-on care experience, you can transfer into training roles where you can train a new cohort of Carers.
Quality Assurance
Quality Assurance is a key role in a home care agency, ensuring that clients receive high-quality and safe care.
