Carer interview questions and how to answer

When you interview for a Carer role, the company will be trying to assess your suitability for a career in the care sector as well as whether you’ll fit in with their company ethos and values.

Whilst you can’t be sure of the exact questions you’ll be asked in an interview, being aware of the types of questions that could be asked will help you feel as prepared as possible.

Generally, questions are broken down into 3 categories – Technical questions, personality questions and questions based around your previous experience.

Example questions

Why do you want to work as a Carer?

Whether you’re experienced in the care sector or just starting out, this is an interview question you will likely be asked. Try to draw upon previous experience to answer this question, which could be professional caring experience or it could be something in your personal life – caring for or helping out a family member or friend.

What qualities do you think you’ll bring to the role?

When you think of a Carer, you think of someone who is compassionate and kind as well as empathetic. Try and think of an example of a time you have shown these qualities.

What is your understanding of Safeguarding?

Safeguarding is a key concept in the care sector, so having an understanding of this is really important. An interviewer will want you to be able to show your understanding of the concept and how it relates to the role of a Carer.

What do you know about person-centred care?

The care sector has moved towards a person-centred care approach which involves the client in decisions about their care. An interviewer will want to understand your interpretation of this and how you would bring it into your Carer role.

How do you deal with emotional situations?

Working in the care sector as a whole can mean dealing with emotional situations on a regular basis so the company will want to understand that you can stay calm in your approach. Try to give an example of an emotional situation you’ve encountered in your professional or personal life along with how you reacted and then coped afterwards.

Can you provide an example of working within a team?

Whilst you may work alone sometimes as a Carer, you’ll always belong to a wider team. Communication and teamwork are vitally important. A potential employer will want to know that you’re a team player and can contribute to a team environment.
