A 1.3m investment by Devon County Council into a helpline for carers in Devon has proven successful in supporting individuals in maintaining a healthy and normal life. More than 8,000 calls have been recorded over a period of eight months, since becoming available in October last year.

The council estimates that, of 82,000 carers in Devon, more than 12,000 do not have the help or resources to achieve respite from their caring responsibilities, a factor health experts agree is crucial in protecting the well-being of these unsung heroes of our communities.

Devon county councillor Stuart Barker agrees that the cost of the helpline has proven a worthy investment, commenting: “The county council’s significant investment in this service demonstrates our commitment to supporting carers, and I’m delighted with the success of the service so far.

“Different arrangements existed in different parts of the county before and this way we can ensure we are providing a high quality service that is the same for everyone, wherever they live.”

Support services available via the Devon Carers helpline, as well as expert advice, includes access to a network of local carers able to offer one-on-one advice and organising activities for young carers, the opportunity to organise short breaks, and the chance to form friendships with other individuals facing similar challenges.

Carers in Devon can find out more at the website www.devoncarers.org.uk, or by phoning the helpline on 08456 434 435; the helpline is maintained by voluntary organisation Westbank, who are dedicated to empowering individuals through emotional support and community initiatives.
