A home care provider will be offering a regular service to help people in the community to understand more about dementia.
Carefound Home Care (Harrogate) home care group has announced that its team of specialist home care providers will be launching a free Understanding Dementia Event, in order to help people in the Harrogate community to learn about dementia.
The event will be open to both families and organisations within the community, and will raise awareness about dementia care.
The first event will take place on Saturday 25 May at 10am to midday at Carefound’s office.
The Carefound director, Oliver Stirk said: “At Carefound we truly understand how difficult it can be for the families of those living with dementia. Our Understanding Dementia Event is not only an opportunity for families and organisations working in the community to learn more about how to help people with dementia at home, but it also provides you with a chance to meet with others and share experiences.”
The event will include a talk by guest speaker Jill Quinn, founder of Dementia Forward, a local charity which provides support for families living with dementia.
During the Understanding Dementia Event there will also be a brief introduction to the SPECAL method, the approach to dementia used by the Carefound home care team.
Through its relationship with the Contented Dementia Trust, Care found has trained their care workers in this approach.
The innovative SPECAL method ensures that people understand dementia from the point of view of the person with the condition by providing practical ways of supporting people with dementia, and it has been viewed as a hugely beneficial way to improve their lives.
The approach encourages carers to follow three Golden Rules; don’t ask questions, listen to the expert and don’t contradict in order to help people with dementia in their first steps towards well-being for life.
All home care team members undertake basic training in the SPECAL method as part of their induction when starting at Carefound.
The event coincides with National Dementia Awareness Week which takes place from Sunday 19 May to Saturday 25 May and will be attended families, volunteers, health and social care professionals and other organisations working in the community.
