Lifestyles - Choices Housing Association is taking an innovative approach to respite care and opening a luxury hotel offering hotel accommodation coupled with nursing care.
“The Cambrian Care-Hotel allows carers to take a break secure in the knowledge their relatives are staying in a modern purpose built, state of the art facility,” according to Jackie Beddow, its general manager.
The respite hotel is in Staffordshire and is due to open in October. It will have 16 bedrooms and people will have the option of staying for as little as an hour or for an afternoon while their carer goes shopping, or a night, a weekend or longer.
Ms Beddow said: “The hotel is for anyone above the age of 18 who needs extra support with a range of support needs such as Multiple Sclerosis, learning disabilities, mental health problems, epilepsy etc.”
Before they check into the hotel “we would go and visit the person and assess their needs to see how much support they would require and tailor the care package to meet this need. They can live in the area or be in the area on holiday. We will also offer a range of activities such as art and crafts, dancing, beauty therapies, tai chi and trips.”
The Cambrian Care-Hotel offers specialist provision for a whole range of conditions including epilepsy, violence and aggression, incontinence, bariatric care, sensory impairments and learning disability with dementia.
The hotel will have regular care staff on-site and staff it can call on according to what needs the person visiting the hotel has.
“Choices Housing Association came up with the idea, after realising respite care is difficult to find and the typical model is based on elderly care, we wanted to modernise it and bring it up to date,” said Ms Beddow.
