Leonard Cheshire Disability charity, which recently called on the House of Lords to back an amendment to make home care visits at least thirty minutes long, has said it is “deeply disappointed” over its failure to do so.

Clare Pelham, chief executive of Leonard Cheshire Disability, said: “We are deeply disappointed that the Government has failed to take this opportunity to once and for all end the disgrace of 15-minute personal care visits in Parliament. Without a specific amendment to stop these visits disabled and older people will continue to face impossible choices like whether to go thirsty or go to the toilet.

“We are certain that the lack of definitive action means that today and every day disabled and older people will pay the price – in rushed and unkind ‘care’. Independent research shows that 9 in 10 of the UK public think that 15 minutes is not long enough to support disabled people and we have been overwhelmed by the reaction of the public to our call to end 15 minute flying visits.”

Leonard Cheshire Disability has pledged not to give up on its campaign and is now urging MPs to respond to public opinion when the Bill moves to the House of Commons.
