A home care provider is creating memory boxes for people with dementia receiving its home care visits.

Home care workers will use the memory boxes to stimulate memories and help the person with dementia recall the past. They will also be an aid to stimulating conversation with the person.

The boxes being created by DoCare home care company based in Stroud, will contain photographs and ornaments with information about the person and what interests them.

“I had the idea from something that care homes do,” said Kerry-Ann Lees, DoCare area manager and dementia lead. “They will often provide what they call a distraction box, so when a resident becomes agitated or upset, the contents of the box will distract them.

“This takes the idea a step further. We’re calling them memory boxes, because this is a more positive name, and means we can be proactive in helping our clients to achieve memorable moments.”

Earlier this year, DoCare contributed to a new manual, aimed at developing the skills of home carers who support people with dementia.

The guide was produced by Skills for Care and was called ‘Better domiciliary care for people with dementia’.

DoCare showed how the company enhances the quality of life of its clients who have dementia, by offering activity-based support.

The company provides home support across Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire.
