When you wake up to a clear blue sky, and the summer heat, you can't help but smile. The memory of cold winter mornings and blustery winds is a distant one, as August sees more and more people venturing outside to enjoy the summer weather in Sheffield. For many of us, the summer months is a joyous time of year, as it gives us an opportunity to get out to explore and socialise. However for some, the threat of soaring temperatures can hamper a happy summer holiday. With the UK's blistering summer heat it can be difficult for older people to adapt to sudden changes in temperature, which can lead to heat exhaustion and in some cases heat stroke. In response to a health and safety warning by the Met office, Home Instead Senior Care Sheffield have put together some tips that can help older people to cope with any heat waves that hit the UK this summer.
1. Sweating is your bodies very own cooling system; as sweat evaporates it is able to cool you down. However sweating throughout the day can drain you of essential fluids. By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even when you aren't thirsty this can significantly hydrate you.
2. Be smart with your choices of clothing. A thick cotton shirt will not keep you as cool as a linen t-shirt. Clothes that are loose fitting, and light weight are excellent for keeping you cool. Further to this wearing lighter coloured clothing will reduce the amount of heat energy absorbed by the suns light.
3. Wearing a hat or a cap will shade you face from the suns rays, and protect it from sun burn.
4. Reducing the amount of time you are out for between 11am and 3pm can save you from getting all hot and bothered. This 4 hour period of the day happens to be the hottest.
5. Taking a cool bath or shower can be all that is required to cool you down. This effect can also be achieved when you are out and about, by applying a cloth dipped in water to the back of your neck and your wrists.
6. Feeling comfortable at home when it is hot is hard to achieve, however the use of a fan or air conditioning unit can maintain a controlled temperature at home. Also closing curtains/blinds can stop the suns light from heating up bedrooms throughout the day.
