Eighty-nine-year-old muscle man Ted Brown has had a triple heart bypass, a new hip and a pacemaker fitted but he is determined to continue competing in powerlifting contests.
The great-grandfather who calls himself "bionic" goes to the gym three times a week and has won nine world titles.
“I love powerlifting”, said Mr Brown.
The octogenarian began powerlifting in 1948.
At the age of 81, the strong man from Bletchley in Buckinghamshire was able to deadlift his own bodyweight.
He said: “Unfortunately, because I had a hip replacement that put paid to doing squats and deadlifts.”
The retired engineer doesn’t drink or smoke but his passion for powerlifting has endured for over 70 years.
In that time, Mr Brown has acquired 30 British titles.
He has gained British records in three powerlifting disciplines; 180kg squat lift, 120kg bench press and 200kg to 500kg deadlift.
Although his age and health issues have meant his family would rather he retired from the activity, Mr Brown is undeterred.
“I think I shall carry on as long as I can anyway.”
