A home care worker was clapped by staff and customers at a petrol station in Guildford and when she went to pay, a kind stranger stepped in front of her and paid for her fuel.

Care worker Terrilea Dawson who revealed that the man spotted her care worker uniform and paid for a full tank of petrol for her which cost £40, said she cried after the kind gesture and added “there are actually really kind people out there”.

Ms Dawson who works for Caremark Guildford and Woking said: “I was standing filling my car up and a man pulled up and walked into the garage. As I was on my way in to pay for my fuel, he turned to me and said ‘no don’t worry I will get this’. I had to say ‘sorry what did you say’ and he repeated it. I said ‘you don’t have to do that’ and he said ‘yes I do thank you to all you and your workers for doing what you do’.

“The men behind the till clapped and were sticking their thumbs up. I asked him if I could get a picture to show everyone just how kind people can be and he agreed.

“What a wonderful man”.

Kevin Lewis, chief executive of Caremark pointed out that “whilst NHS staff quite rightly are being recognised for the invaluable work they do” it is the "home care workers who are right at the front line of providing care and support for people living in their own homes across the UK".

He added: “We should all be showing great appreciation and admiration for this country’s huge workforce of carers visiting the homes of vulnerable people living in the community.

“Our carers continue to visit clients in their own homes providing them with a vital service helping clients of all ages live as safely and as securely as possible in their own homes, yet placing themselves at considerable risk; having insufficient protective clothing and not knowing if they or their clients are carrying the virus.

“Hence the recognition shown by the customers at the service station for such a carer is fantastic and reflects the feelings and appreciation of all of us for our amazing carers.”

Caremark have thousands of care and support workers up and down the country helping the elderly, people with special needs, those needing respite or simply companionship in these days of social isolation.
