In the wake of the Lionesses’ triumph at the Euros earlier this year, schoolgirls have been given new football kits, courtesy of home care provider Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey.

Schoolgirls in year 5 and 6 at Oliver’s Battery Primary School in Winchester previously wore un-matching polo shirts and PE kits to matches until home care workers at local Bluebird Care branch stepped in to support them.

Now they can proudly take to the football pitch in full kits adorned with the school’s crest and squad numbers.

'Through generosity like this...girls' football can grow'

Carly Redfern, head teacher at Oliver's Battery Primary School, said: “The pupils and I are incredibly grateful for the very generous sponsorship Bluebird Care have provided. “It is through generosity like this that girls' football can continue to grow."

The headteacher said: "The girls can’t wait to get out on the pitch in their smart new kits, so thank you Bluebird Care for your continued support in our community.”

The Football Association has recently criticised the government over a lack of opportunities for girls to play sport in schools and believe it damages women's football.

The home care service, which is rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, gave its sponsorship support to the local school’s girls football team ahead of their new season to show how they value the women’s game and want to grow the next generation of Lionesses.

Norman Murphy, managing director of Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey said: “We care deeply about supporting our local community, so when we heard that the school had no kit, we were keen to help ensure their girls’ teams were kitted out.

"We are very proud to support the school team and help drive opportunities for young girls in our local community to get involved in football.”
