Sharon came to Home Instead Barnsley in 2020 after having been referred by a friend. Despite having never worked in care before, she had had experience in caring for her father, who sadly passed away a few years prior to starting her role as a Care Professional.

This personal experience led her to be interested in the care sector, although she was admittedly “apprehensive at the start of [her] role”, but she now understands that, often, “clients are probably more nervous than you are”.

Sharon’s journey at Home Instead:

After having been with the team for over three years, Sharon made the difficult decision to take on a new role in 2023 where she thought she may be up for a new challenge in working in a care home, rather than as a Care Professional in the community at Home Instead.

Although she enjoyed this change and the different people she met and worked with, Sharon soon made the decision (after two weeks!) to come back to her clients at Home Instead, after realising that home care was the type of care she really loved to work in. The team here at Home Instead Barnsley were, of course, delighted to welcome her back and pleased to hear how much she missed Home Instead!

“I missed having the rapport with individuals in their own homes. Our clients have the bonus of the 1-1 care from caregivers, as well as the advantage of being supported to stay in their own homes.”

To us, it’s personal:

For Sharon, care isn’t just a job where you get a pay check at the end of the month. Many jobs may tell people to ‘keep their personal lives to themselves’, but in care that’s just not how it goes.

At Home Instead we strive to show how ‘to us, it’s personal’, and people like Sharon echo this ethos. With the minimum visit at Home Instead being one hour, Sharon, much like the rest of our team, loves how she has time to build friendships with the people she cares for and truly make a difference to their lives.

“The most rewarding part is when you can clearly see the delight on their faces when you arrive, and you realise that they’ve really been looking forward to you arriving.

“The great advantage to Home Instead is the minimum of the 1 hour call per visit - within the hour you can build a great rapport with your clients, and often calls can be several hours too which is really lovely.”
